We are saddened to report on today’s passing of Benjamin Brewster, better known to many of us simply as Ben. He lived extraordinary personal and professional lives, and we were all greatly enriched to have him in ours.
In addition to him being best known to us as the executive vice president and principal lobbyist of NYSALU (predecessor to NAIFA-NYS), he was a fixture on the Albany scene. Known for his integrity, honesty and thorough knowledge of insurance issues, Ben was one of the truly great people to work the halls of government and grace the halls of our respective offices. He was a personal friend to a great many of us and, as an insurance agent and general manager, he was one of us.
Less well known, to some, was Ben’s Annapolis graduation and commission in the United States Navy, which took him to Morocco and tours of duty intercepting Russian intelligence during the height of the Cold War.
He not only won high professional acclaim throughout his insurance career, but he is also the inspiration for the Ben Brewster Government Relations Award, NAIFA-NYS’ second highest honor.
We were so fortunate to have Ben return to the association for our annual conference in Albany this year. Spry, witty and full of energy, it was wonderful to have Ben back with us again. Of course, as he always did, his lovely wife Anne was on his arm. So good it was to see them.
To Anne, their children and extended family, we carry Ben with us in our hearts and them in our prayers as they say farewell, for now.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, November 12 at the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints, located at 62 South Swan Street, Albany, NY 12210. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. There will be an opportunity to meet the family from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. (also at the Cathedral). More information regarding the Cathedral, including directions to get there, is available at www.cathedralofallsaints.org.
