The Department of Financial Services (DFS) announced on May 22 the creation of its new Cybersecurity Division, to be led by a former U.S. Attorney whose area of expertise is cyber crimes.  The Division, which DFS calls the “first of its kind to be established at a banking or insurance regulator”, will enforce the DFS cybersecurity regulation and issue related guidance, advise on cybersecurity examinations, and conduct cyber-related investigations in coordination with DFS’s new Consumer Protection and Financial Enforcement Division.

According to DFS, the Cybersecurity Division also will disseminate trends and threat information about cyber-attacks, incorporate DFS’s existing cyber-security experts (who currently are spread through various other divisions) into one department, and continue to develop DFS’s cyber-expertise.
